The Pigou-Dalton Principle and the Structure of Distributive Justice
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Pigou-Dalton (PD) principle, 1 applied to some type of good, recommends a nonleaky, non-rank-switching transfer from someone with more of the good to someone with less, as long as no one else‘s holdings are changed— non-leaky in the sense that the one who starts out with less of the good gains by exactly as much as the other loses; non-rank-switching in the sense that the one who starts out with less does not end up with more than the other. Here is a formal statement of this principle: Let g = (g1, g2, ..., gN) be a list of the holdings of good G among the population of N individuals, with gi a number quantifying the holdings of any given individual i, and g*= (g1*, g2*, ..., gN*) another such list. If there exist two individuals h and l such that gh > gl, ∆ > 0, gh* = gh − ∆ ≥ gl* = gl + ∆, with gi = gi* for every other individual i in the population, then g* is an improvement over g.

Mr. Fairmind Is Post-welfarist: Opinions on Distributive Justice
I survey the results of empirical research, showing that the opinions about distributive justice of the population at large are in sharp conflict with the assumptions of traditional welfare economics. I focus on the results concerning welfarism and concerning the Pigou-Dalton transfer criterion. At the same time, I show that recent developments in social choice theory are much more in line with...
متن کاملA consistent multidimensional Pigou-Dalton transfer principle
The Pigou-Dalton principle demands that a regressive transfer decreases social welfare. In the unidimensional setting this principle is consistent, because regressivity in terms of attribute amounts and regressivity in terms of individual well-being coincide in the case of a single attribute. In the multidimensional setting, however, the relationship between the various attributes and well-bein...

متن کاملCharacterizing multidimensional inequality measures which fulfil the Pigou-Dalton bundle principle
In the unidimensional setting, the well known Pigou-Dalton transfer principle is the basic axiom to order distribution in terms of inequality. This axiom has a number of generalizations to the multidimensional approach which have been used to derive inequality measures. However, up to now, none of them has assumed the Pigou-Dalton bundle dominance criterion, introduced by Fleurbaey and Trannoy ...
متن کاملThe norm of distributive Justice and its relation to fairness and equity with an emphasis on Imam Ali`s governmental ethic
As is understood by governmental ethics, governors should distribute possibilities and economical and social opportunities among citizens according to distributive justice. In this paper, the author, surveying and criticizing the views in the field, has shown that the type of work, need and public equality taken as norms in the views, may be counted as the ways for recognizing personal rights n...
